of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you
for their families. the news, coming as the community of newtown begins to mourn, the 26 victims who did not survive on friday t was an emotional memorial ceremony at newtown high school last night. president obama, sitting among the mourners, in the high school, joining community and religious leaders at the service. first though he met privately with each of the families of the victims. what, what an experience that must have been. and you could see, that he was visibly moved when he came out of on the stage and the entire nation has been moved by the events in -- newtown connecticut, 72 hours ago. sandy hook elementary will remain closed indefinitely, perhaps a month or perhaps permanently as the investigation continues and as they learn more about the gunman, adam lanza, what may have motivated this terrible unspeakable crime. rick leventhal joins us live from newtown with the latest on that investigation. rick? >> reporter: megyn, you may have heard paul vance say there were moving vans, collecting furniture of the classroom other equipment from the school so it can be moved to another school,

and prayers go out to the victims, to their families, and to their friends and the community of newtown, connecticut. nearly all of the senators and congress have left washington dc. from all over the country, there were outpouring of condolences and sympathy and there were senators and congressmen who sent out statements calling for gun control. in some cases with no political decisions by many to politicize the tragedy. here are me of their names and what they said. congressman bobby rush said lawmakers can no longer be held hostage by those who are opposed to reasonable gun control laws. congreman eliot engel of new york, the fact that we cannot pass sensible gun control in this congress is a blot on her reputation. and congressmen jerry nadler saying that now is not the time to have a serious discussion about and control, if not now, when would it be? at least 20 members of congress reacting with calls to restrict constitutional rights to bear arms. all over those calls coming from members of the democratic party. here is the number who chose to talk about mental illness. the disaff
newtown, connecticut, school shooting. let's go live to jay gray. he has the latest developments on this horrific story. >> reporter: hey there, maria. every day here brings a more difficult task. today providing the toughest. this grieving community gathering to say the first two of 26 emotional good-byes. two 6-year-old boys laid to rest today. their friends and family gathering to say those good-byes. that as the investigation continues as well. and we're learning more from police about what exactly they're looking for and what they found. they say they have a wealth of evidence that's been recovered. not only from the lanza home but also the school here. they also warn that the school will likely remain a crime scene for several months. that this investigation is going to take quite some time. that they have more than 100 witnesses to interview. that includes some of the young children who survived the massacre at sandy hook elementary. of course they're being very patient with those children. waiting until the time is right. and say they will only talk to them, only ask them
